Today’s college students face many challenging circumstances, unlike any previous generation.  In addition to the usual angst of beginning college, students face a backdrop of social justice issues, a pandemic illness, financial instability, and the pressures of leveraging their diploma to pursue employment and personal goals and dreams.   In this context, faculty can play a crucial role in helping students transition into higher education effectively, personalize their learning, and offer a listening ear to work through challenges and uncertainties. This workshop will focus on developing inclusive and hospitable learning environments, empathic teaching, and a forum for difficult topics of conversation.

This workshop will promote active collaboration among participants as we grapple with crucial research related to each topic and then share and compile practical applications from their own experiences. The sequence of activities will be as follows:
• A topic is introduced along with the most pertinent research
•. Participants, through guided questions, are asked to share their strategies and experiences related to the subject (along with any essential resources that may not have been discussed)
• As this application process evolves, participants will record their contributions on the Padlet app.
• After the workshop, participants will be sent a digital document (along with the PowerPoints) containing all of the contributions made by their colleagues
